June 4, 2007 The World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame, in Long Beach, will present “An Evening in Indonesia” from 6 to 9PM on Saturday, June 9, 2007. The culturally rich event is a benefit for the Peninsula Art Association and will be marked by the opening of the museum’s “Kites of the Shadow Puppets” exhibit and the release of the book Ladies of the Borobudur. Highlight of the evening will be a reading by author, Barbara Haines Howett, from Ladies of the Borobudur, a novel of linked stories exploring the interactions between expatriates and natives and their changing perceptions of each other's cultures. The reading will be followed by a question and answer session about aspects of Indonesia's history, politics, religion and mysticism woven throughout the novel. Howett will also share slides taken during the four years she resided in Indonesia. Capturing the magic and spiritual significance of kite flying in far away places, the “Kites of Shadow Puppets” exhibit will add more sparkle to the evening. The exhibit will feature Indonesian kites gifted to the museum by Terry Shields and Indonesian kite flyers who participated in the Washington State International Kite Festival. The collection of kites is closely linked to nature, protective spirits and revered ancestors. Taking center stage will be three large Balinese kites measuring three meters wide, one with a decorative head and a seventy-meter tail. Elephant, tiger, horse and dragon kites will be displayed alongside leaf kites of varying shapes and sizes. The exhibit will remain open through the end of the year. During the evening, Indonesian art, artifacts and national dress also will be on display, Indonesian food will be served, and videos of kite flying and kite fishing in Indonesia will be shown. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau, the World Kite Museum and other locations along the peninsula. With its mix of sensational restaurants, comfortable lodging, unique museums and attractions, lighthouses, galleries, and long, windswept beach, the Long Beach Peninsula remains one of the Northwest’s most enjoyable getaway destinations.
