LONG BEACH PENINSULA, Wash. – March 28, 2007 –

The opening of trout fishing season on April 28 will also herald in fishing derby season on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula.

On opening day, little fisher-people will delight in Ilwaco’s Black Lake Fishing Derby, a kid-only trout catching extravaganza at well-stocked Black Lake on the morning of April 28. Children 14 and under will be able to participate in a variety of contests and activities with prizes awarded by age group for the biggest catch, highest aggregate weight ratio of the participant to the fish and more. Registration will be onsite and will include goodie bags and refreshments.

Ilwaco, referred to as the “Fishing Capital of the West,” historically sees the opening of halibut and sturgeon seasons in May followed by a continuation of fishing derbies with Long Beach’s seventh annual Surf Perch Derby on May 19. Casting from the shore of the vast sandy ocean beach, participating anglers compete in both individual and team categories for cash prizes. Registration and an entry fee are required.

June 16 brings more excitement for fishing enthusiasts with the SW Washington Anglers’ Chinook Sturgeon Derby in Chinook. Teams from the Puget Sound Region to Southern Willamette Valley will participate in fun for the whole family with team or individual prizes, a celebratory dinner and a raffle. Prizes consist of cash, Lamiglas rods and Okuma reels for the winners, as well as a collection of trout rods and reels for youth participants. Only 200 team slots are available for registration, so early sign-up is recommended. Registration materials are available at http://www.swwa.org/derby.htm. Proceeds benefit the SW Washington Anglers’ Association sports fishing projects.

Ilwaco’s salmon fishing season on the lower Columbia River starts in July and is followed by ocean fishing from Buoy 10 and beyond in August. The charter boat operators in Ilwaco are also known to arrange salmon derbies during salmon season.

For those who enjoy the culinary side of the fishing season, the fish markets and canneries at Port of Ilwaco, Seaview, Klipsan, and Oysterville offer an abundance of fresh fish selections. The season’s appetizing catches also will be appearing on the menus of highly touted restaurants all along the 28-mile peninsula.

Boasting the highest catch per unit of effort of any place on the West Coast, the ocean, bays, rivers and streams surrounding the Long Beach Peninsula have been long-time favorite spots for sports fishing and seafood gatherers.
