Blessing of Chinook canoe on Long Beach Peninsula’s Discovery Trail
Last Washington appearance by the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles prior to making their return voyage.

WHO:  Pacific County Friends of Lewis & Clark in collaboration with the City of Long Beach, Discovery Expedition of St. Charles Missouri, & the Chinook Tribe

WHAT: Life-size reproduction of Chinook canoe cleansing, blessing and dedication. The canoe is a replica of the vessel the Corps of Discovery appropriated from a Chinook village while wintering in Fort Clatsop in 1806. It will sit atop a sand dune on the Pacific Ocean side of the Long Beach boardwalk, and will be on display at Fort Clatsop from March 23 to 26, before being put on permanent display in St. Charles. The canoe is 31 feet long, weighs approx. 300 lbs., and is 4.5 feet wide in the center. Richard Brumley, a Discovery Expedition member from Montana, built the canoe.

WHEN: Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at noon

WHERE: On the north end of the Long Beach boardwalk at the Bolstad beach approach, Long Beach, Pacific County, Washington.

DIRECTIONS:  Take Hwy. 103 north on the Long Beach Peninsula to the stoplight at Bolstad Avenue. Turn left and proceed to the boardwalk. Public parking is located on either side of the approach. [Maps & Directions]

WHY:  Another in the series of events commemorating the Corps of Discovery’s arrival and over-wintering at the Pacific Ocean. This is the last event on the Washington side of the Columbia River before the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles makes their return voyage east. (The Expedition is scheduled to depart Ft. Clatsop, Oregon, on March 23.)

  • Noon – Gather at the dedication site
  • 12:05 – Welcome – Ken Ramsey, Mayor, Long Beach, Washington
  • 12:10 – Explanation of Ceremony – Ray Gardner, Vice Chairman, The Chinook Tribe and Josh Loftis, Discovery Expedition of St. Charles
  • 12:20 – Cleansing and blessing by Ray Gardner, The Chinook Tribe
  • 12:30 – Photo opportunities
